Carpenters Union Merges Five States
According to Bloomberg/BNA Construction Labor Reports: Feb. 9 — The Metropolitan Regional Council of Carpenters has merged with the Northeast Regional Council of Carpenters to form an expanded council representing about 40,000 workers across five states, the Carpenters and Joiners of America announced Feb. 3. The merger will allow the union to streamline work rules for Carpenters-represented workers based in Delaware, New Jersey, Maryland, New York and Pennsylvania, the union said. It also is expected to help create additional work opportunities for bargaining unit workers and strengthen the collective bargaining power among the workers in that region, the union said. “The expansion of the NRCC is an exciting opportunity for our organization,” NRCC Executive Secretary-Treasurer John Ballantyne said in a statement. “It will enhance benefits for our membership and expand market opportunities for our members and contractor partners throughout the Council's geographical jurisdiction.” Under the merger, 18 local unions have been combined to create six new locals. Two locals were dissolved and merged with other existing groups. In 2014, the Metropolitan Regional Council of Carpenters merged with the Mid-Atlantic Regional Council of Carpenters, adding to its representation locals in Virginia and the District of Columbia (60 CLR 176, 4/10/14).
